Anyone reading this right now/read it?
I'm currently 70 pages into it, and agree with nearly every point Hitchens makes.
What do you think of it?
Oh, and try not to make this a debate. This is just to discuss the book.

........... misleading title
I like the way you decapitalised the word 'God' in your thread title. Was that intentional or was it a mistake?
That's the exact way it's written on the book's cover.Zitat:

For everyone to lazy to search
This guy is my god.
So whats this book about?
Is it about god?
EDIT: NVM, Just saw the wiki link
OpinionZitat:
Religion misrepresents the origins of humankind and the cosmos
Opinion once againZitat:
Religion demands unreasonable suppression of human nature
hahaha, stereotypeZitat:
Religion inclines people to violence and blind submission to authority
OpinionZitat:
Religion expresses hostility to free inquiry
A book with nothing but opinions, I would rate this as a fiction.
Actually it has an 8 page bibliography/references section.Zitat:
Zitat von Basil Zero
It's non-fiction, and lots of it is pure fact.
And if you read more than just a summary of the book, you'd see.
but its still based upon the author's opinion on his view of religion.Zitat:
Zitat von Teowulf
hell no god is awful, he doesnt help me on anything, when I pray for someone sick, they die. When I pray for someone to die, they live. When I pray for someone to be safe, they kill themself.
God only helps me on small term things, like he helps me find the TV remote, and find the back scratcher when my back itches, and he helps me find the ice cream sandwiches in the back of my freezer.
Last time I prayed to god, this is what happened.
1. My teacher dies from cancer
2. My 2nd closest friend dies from falling 50 ft on an ATV.
3. My pet cat dies from being hit by a car.
4. My grandma falls down a 40ft flight of stairs, but somehow lives (not god related).
5. My grandpa has a stroke and is paralyzed on his entire left side.
6. My parents wont let me go to Lollapalooza.
This all happened in a 2 month span, great god huh?
And god dam it! I was just confirmed, now I cant convert.
Heard of Fate?Zitat:

Yes, but that doesn't make it fiction.Zitat:
Zitat von Basil Zero
dood..the way you posted....its hilarious........err...so rry...now I feel bad :(

I know, I'm just saying some of the things the stereotypes are fictional if he looks at the entire whole of religion. Therefore a opinion.Zitat:
Zitat von Teowulf
It is his opinion, but he does do a fantastic job of supporting his argument.Zitat:
Zitat von Basil Zero
He even attends religious ceremonies with various friends of all types of religions. Ba(r/s) Mitzvahs, Baptisms, Sunday Church, etc. you name it.
I'd recommend reading it even if you are religious.
But Bazil, you're forgetting that his opinion is fact.
Lol. Try not to start a debate here. Go to w/e thread we have for that to debate. :pZitat:
Zitat von whitehawk
I was being sarcastic. Kind of.
There's no way I can be convinced god is real unless jesus is sent down from the heavens again and turns my water into wine.
errr....well his opinion is flawed:tup:Zitat:

Same here, but not everybody feels that way.Zitat:

Hitchens is also not trying to convince people that god is not real. He acknowledges that religion will always exist. His point is that religion is not a wholly a good thing, and that there are many, many horrible consequences of it.Zitat:
"Religious faith is, precisely because we are still-evolving creatures, ineradicable. It will never die out, or at least not until we get over the fear of death, and of the dark, and of the unknown, and of each other. For this reason, I would not prohibit it even if I thought I could" (Hitchens, pg. 12).
Ya, I never said it would never exist. It will for a long long time to come. I think the followers of religion will be lower and lower as years go by, but it will still be there. Our money will still trust god. The President will always thank god. The Simpsons will always go to Sunday church.
You can see it happening already though. How many families do you know that go to church every Sunday? 50 years ago, a lot of families do, including my Mother. But now she doesn't, and never took me or my brother to church.
of course, there's nothing wrong with that.Zitat:
Zitat von Teowulf
The author is obviously a douche bag atheist who has no life and wants to bring other people down. That is his entertainment. Even though have not read the book, all the "writing" is a bunch of crap.
@SpiderJames: Oh no, your parents won't let you go to lollapalooza. It is not God's fault. God is not simple. He is not a genie that answers your wishes. No one is perfect, and everyone dies someday. That's life.
I agree, I mean I can understand why the author would note that, but to teowulf's post, its not religion that does the cruel things, but the people who enforce it.Zitat:
Zitat von whitehawk
I am a witness of that, which is why I dont go to church every week, only go like once a month, however in india I go everyday :)

lets face it, people are hypocrites, the priests are hypocrites, dont judge the officials of the religion, judge the ACTUAL believers.
but god is fiction so....Zitat:
Zitat von Basil Zero
It has facts to support the opinions. This book looks great, must get it.Zitat:
Zitat von Basil Zero
God is not fiction, prove to me how he's not there.
since there is no evidence for his existence. besides the amount of people who belives in itZitat:

God is fiction, prove to me how he's there.Zitat:
Zitat von hawk2012
JK..I actually believe in a God..
There is but it's a matter of opinion so there's no way of saying he's not there.
Or that he is..can we close this?Zitat:
Zitat von hawk2012
So... Then he isn't great... Right?Zitat:
Zitat von -skelevision-
Anyway, I had a little intrest in this book unitl I saw this guy on Real Time with Bill Maher. He's a real asshat... He maybe right, but he needs to learn how to not be a d*ck...
i belive in nature and how amazing it is that I exist.
God is fiction, prove to me how he's there.Zitat:
Zitat von hawk2012
It depends on what you mean by "god"...Zitat:
Zitat von hawk2012
If you mean the bible's god, then we already know he doesn't exsist. But if you mean "god", as in an omnipresent being, then no, we have no proof either way.
Which is why I detest both Religion, and Atheism, because they're both guilty of the same thing. Blind belief.
do you have proof to back up your bark? if not, than your opinion is more fiction than God is.Zitat:
